Andrewes House
This full renovation of a type 20 one bedroom flat at Andrewes House in the Barbican Estate called for a sensitive refurbishment with modern introductions to sit alongside the building’s original features.
Our clients asked for the overall design to be as close to the original fit-out as possible, and we retained much of the apartment’s existing fabric. The kitchen design is an evolution of the original Barbican galley kitchen, with each new element a bespoke piece.
The doors and cupboards all have recessed kitchen handles, essential for a galley kitchen, as well as spray lacquered doors, laminate carcass units and a stainless steel countertop with integrated LED lighting.
The same materiality continues throughout the apartment. New sliding doors with recessed handles slide across to partition the living area and studio, creating a flexible space for working from home or a guest bedroom.
The hallway leads into a spacious main bedroom, which is characterised by full-height and full-width glazing that gives access to a private balcony. We took great care refurbishing the external hardwood frames to make full use of the large fenestration, and highlight the uninterrupted views of the Barbican water gardens.
